Yeah, I'm one of the few faithful that dares to say it; Watchmen just doesn't work for me.
Isaac Asimov once wrote that he was helpless when trying to write for screen. This convinced him that two radically different aesthetics were involved and he was content to know what he could not do. I think this is true of some stories. They just work better in other medium. I can't stand "Legend of the Seeker" on TV because it completely fails to capture the feel and the peril of the Sword of Truth books. Roger Zelazney's Amber books were adapted by DC comics years ago. These are beautiful volumes, with stunning art that looks nothing like anything I ever imagined in Amber. I think I just might jump off a tall cliff if anyone ever optioned the movie rights to it.
It's not a criticism of Watchmen as a story, but rather as a movie. It simply works better as graphic prose.
