With most sports, I just don't care. I'll go to a baseball game or take note if thre's a real upset going like the Phillidelphia Flyers almost-comeback last year, but Football really rubs me the wrong way for some reason. It's just pointless violence, but it's pretentious enough to masquerade as something noble. Even Boxing and wrestling don't pretend to be any more than combat. Football however, is treated like a great American heroic. It's taught and encouraged in our high schools; indeed, there are no greater heroes in school than the football players in their letter jackets. Never mind that between 1997 and the spring of 2002, FIFTY-THREE high school students were KILLED playing high school football. (National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research, Feb. 2001) and these statistics don't take into account other injuries and paralysis, which are on the rise since the 90's.

Perhaps its just my temperament. If I lived in Roan times, I probably wouldn't have cared about the gladiators either. Come to think of it...I've never seen that Russel Crowe film....

Fun to note, I'm nto the only one observing the Super Bowl in the world of webcomics. Hijinks Ensue has the most perfect description of what it feels like for me to watch football (Check out Joel's blog below the comic) and Ctrl-Alt-Del provides a handy PSA for those of us who don't know how to talk football on Monday Morning.
