This is kind of the fanboy's version of Elvis vs. the Beatles.
I was always more of a Star Trek fan than a Star Wars one, and I think the character of Vader has really been diluted by the prequels. I've always had a problem rooting for Anikin as the hero of the clone wars anyhow, knowing what is to come, and the more I see of him, the less interesting Vader becomes. The less imposing and mysterious he seems. He's really been robbed of much of his power.
Mind you, Star Trek isn't immune to this kind of creative decay either. I gave up on Voyager half way through the series, and barely watched three episodes of Enterprise. Still the wealth of characters in the trek universe means the damage can be a little more evenly spread around. If anything, Picard has taken the biggest hit when it comes to the watering down of a character; though the current movie series does threaten to dumb down Kirk. Still, at this point I'd give Kirk the win. More on Wednesday.
