I'm not sure I agree about dumber lyrics, but I'm not about to make an aesteic issue into an arguement.
What's funny about steve's statement is that you probably get through Hymns faster and easier than modern worship music. Hymns have structure and a set pattern. Contemporary worship music is designed to be more spontaneous and improvisational. In the wrong hands it can go on FOREVER.
Fun Fact: When I was on the worship team at my old Church, when ever they wanted to do a hymn in the worship set, they had me lead it - I was the only one familiar with them!
BTW, a few years ago Michael Sweet released an album titled "Him" which is his versions of a lot of old standards. Really interesting interpretations of the music.
